RE-IMAGINED SPACES
PART TWO| 2019
THE RHYTHM OF SHADOWS
THE WINDOW PROJECT
The Glasgow School of Art
Year: 2018
Brand: Aesop
Practitioner: Vito Acconci

The Window Project seeks to explore diverse approaches through the design process. In particular, how the act of making can start a design process, thus the term “thinking through making”. The project goes through a series of phases: the study of a given brand & practitioner, intuitive making workshops, textile pattern & furniture making and finally the window design.

Making Process - Collages, Textile Patterns, Furniture
Making Process - A5 Window
Acconci is best known to cause discomfort and provocation with his art, somebody who usually breaks the boundaries and limits to achieve his art. Following Piece was chosen as the main performance to focus on as it strongly displayed Acconci's key characteristics. Rubber bands are always testing boundaries, stretching the limit of pull until it breaks. It also causes tension and certain level of discomfort when pulled to extreme as its breaking point is unknown and comes as a surprise. With a large material presence, rubber bands suit Aesop’s design style.

Experimenting using other elastic bands that might give off the same tension the rubber band gives. However, this again did not give off the same effect as rubber bands. With strong material and colour presence in addition to the essence of Acconci’s key ideas, a suitable window is made for Aesop.
