The Glasgow School of Art

Year: 2018

Site: Kwong Wai Shui Hospital

The choice project is a 'live' project developed in collaboration with external and professional stakeholders. The task was to propose a detailed interior design for the day activity unit for elderly which includes dementia patients. Taking into account for the small site area, it is necessary to design furniture and fittings to be multi-functional and modular. Themes are also introduced in the day activity unit as referred to existing design in KWSH.

The project intention is to upgrade the skills of the elderly in terms of technology, a key factor in being up to date with the current generation. The idea of life-long learning whereby volunteers who frequently visit can be the possible candidates to guide the elderly.

Following the idea of keeping up to date with the current generation, it invoked thoughts about how the current generation uses technology nowadays. When dining comes into picture, cafes seems to be the place most people go to. This inspired me to create an environment that is cafe-life, through adding elements to walls, decorative items and consistent use of materials.
