RE-IMAGINED SPACES: PART TWO

THE RHYTHM OF SHADOWS

The Glasgow School of Art

Year: 2019

Sites: Linkbridge between Ng Teng Fong Hospital & Westgate

Looking into the play of light and shadow in everyday spaces, a transitional space was chosen as the typology of this project. This project aims to target users from the hospital and explore how light and shadow can momentarily evoke a sense of calmness through the transition. The idea of rhythm and the controlling the amount of light and shadow entering the space was explored.

As Kahn suggests, darkness evokes a form of mysteriousness and portrays silence. The forms of shadow becomes more rigid and darker when reaching the middle of the transition walkway. The idea of darkness, minimal light and stillness evoke silence in the space and create a contemplative atmosphere. At the darkest and most still point of the walkway, a slit allows a ray of light to enter the space. The only benches are placed here to encourage one to momentarily remain at this place.
